In areas like eastern U.P. more than 70 percent of the people are depending on agriculture for their livelihoods. The small farmers having less than one hectare of land are more than 80 percent, in the area. These small land holding farmers are frustrated due to escalating costs of inputs and continuously degrading soil fertility. Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group, initiated low external input ecological agriculture in the area focussing the small-marginal and women farmers. Through the processes like increasing diversity and complexity in the farm system, strengthening recycling processes and maintaining soil fertility- through bio inputs and ecological methods, the farmers have availed higher net gains. The health of their farm, soil and their own families improved significantly. Theses motivated farmers are now training other farmers, NGOs, government and extension agents demonstrating their own fields. The synergy of traditional knowledge of farmers and scientific know-how helped the farmers in solving their problems and awaiting better yields.
